After much speculation and accompanied by an unrelenting onslaught of PR campaigns, the list of 2017 Oscar nominees for the 89th Academy Awards is finally here.

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, La La Land lead the pack with 14 nods, tying the record held by Titanic and All About Eve. While #OscarsSoWhite still rings mostly true here, note that actors of color managed to slide into directing and acting categories this year. For best director, Barry Jenkins nabbed a nomination for the almost universally hailed Moonlight. On the acting side: Denzel Washington (Fences) was nominated in the lead actor category, while Ruth Negga (Loving) and Viola Davis (Fences) was nominated for lead actress, while Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Dev Patel (Lion) got nods in the supporting actor category, alongside Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), who were nominated for best supporting actress.

Nabbing 5 nominations, it also looks like Manchester by the Sea managed to escape relatively unscathed from the recent resurfacing of sexual harassment lawsuits against the film’s lead, Casey Affleck, by former colleagues Amanda White and Magdalena Gorky, who served as Affleck’s producer and DP on the widely panned mockumentary, I’m Still Here. What that says about our industry machine? It’s a complicated matter which we’ll discuss in a follow-up post.

A snub more so than a surprise, Martin Scorsese’s Silence grabbed only one nomination, in cinematography. And with Hacksaw Ridge sliding into the nominations too, it looks like Hollywood’s truly forgiven Mel Gibson.

While the guessing game isn’t over yet, let the full list of nominees below feed your curiosity for now. The 89th Academy Awards takes place Sunday, February 26, 2017.
