We are event people. For over 30 years we have been producing family festivals throughout Southern California. We are parents to 5 kids. By default, we become the "fundraiser couple" for our kids' schools. Now we offer our services to schools throughout the country.

President of Friends of Franklin

The purpose of this letter is to highly recommend Phillip Dane as an event planner for your school’s upcoming functions. My name is Adam Moore, and for the past five years I have sat on the board of Friends of Franklin Avenue School, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that raises over $350,000 a year for our elementary school. As the President of Friends of Franklin for three years (2017-2020), I am uniquely suited to provide insight into Mr. Dane’s work as an event planner of our annual Fall Festival.

 

For more than a decade, our annual Fall Festival was the same – pizza by the slice, snow cones, bake sale, and carnival games (the good old duck pond, or donuts on a string), all organized and operated by parent volunteers. It was a grassroots event, and it showed, for better and for worse. It was always an enjoyable event, but not memorable, and it reliably made a few thousand a year. This was a perfectly fine scenario for many years. But when our school lost Title I funding, all eyes turned to Friends of Franklin to start raising money to make up for that lost revenue. Fall Fest had to get big and profitable – and fast.

 

That’s where Mr. Dane entered the picture. When his youngest child entered Franklin in 2016, he volunteered to help bring food trucks and inflatables onto campus. Not only did it raise the profile and quality of the event, but our profits increased as well – more families bought tickets for the inflatables, and the food trucks gave us a cut of their profits.

 

In 2017, Mr. Dane was given full reign over Fall Fest, and that’s when the event exploded – in a great way. He brought in real carnival games with professional staff members to run them, more inflatables, more food trucks, live music, and local businesses. Attendance went up, as did our revenues. He consistently delivered the event for thousands of dollars below budget, and our profits doubled.

 

In 2019, LA City Councilmember David Ryu challenged us to make Fall Fest event bigger by closing off the street in front of our school. Mr. Dane went above and beyond the call of duty to secure permits from LAPD, LAFD and the Bureau of Street Services. Because of his decades-long career as an events planner in Los Angeles, Mr. Dane is connected to the top decision makers in every pertinent city department, as well as in LAUSD. When Friends of Franklin gets inundated with confusing requests for paperwork, budgets, permits, etc., Mr. Dane handles it all with grace and efficiency. Even if he’s never met the “new guy” in charge at a particular department, by the time he’s finished with a phone call, the two of them are best friends.

 

Considering the amount of work I have to do connected to Friends of Franklin, taking the time to write this letter shows how valuable Mr. Dane’s leadership has been to our organization. More than being a great event planner, he is also an incredible human being; a man who deeply cares about education in our city.
